E-cigarette critics get research dollars from industry competitors

Some interesting news recently landed in Jeff Stier’s inbox.

“Today’s a good day to quit smoking!” proclaimed an email from NYC Quits, part of a statewide tobacco control program that gives away free nicotine patches and gum every year.

Stier, a risk analyst with the National Center for Public Policy Analysis, signed up for the program, not because he’s a smoker (other than the occasional cigar) but for research.

Air Sampling confirms secondhand vapor is harmless

The California Department of Public Health has been carrying out air sampling in vape shops throughout the state, as part of its initiative to determine the health effects of second-hand vapor exposure.

Why Teens Are Smoking Less, In Their Own Words

When Maya Terrell saw the anti-smoking television commercial, she knew she would never try a cigarette.

It featured an ex-smoker with a hole in her throat where her larynx used to be.

“I was like, ‘Never!’” recalled Terrell, 18. “I was scared.”

Besides, she said, smoking is just plain gross.

“My friends don’t smoke cigarettes,” said Terrell, of Sacramento, Calif. “It’s nasty.”

Terrell is emblematic of a generation of teenagers who appear more knowledgeable about the risks of tobacco — and are smoking fewer cigarettes than ever before.

E-cigarettes reduce tobacco cravings and help people quit smoking, study finds

WASHINGTON -- Vaping is having a moment. The Oxford Dictionaries recently named the term, which means "to inhale and exhale the vapor produced by an electronic cigarette or similar device," its Word of the Year for 2014. Estimates put the size of the e-cigarette market at around $2.5 billion in annual sales. Users tout them as tar-free alternatives to traditional cigarettes that help them reduce their nicotine consumption. Others are worried about all the unknowns associated with huffing propylene glycol and concentrated nicotine.

Debate on safety of e-cigarettes continues

Opposing views on the potential impact of electronic cigarettes on public health are published in the open access journal BMC Medicine. The commentaries, by two experts, differ in their views on the topic but are united in their call for a rational discussion based on evidence. E-cigarettes 'help smokers quit or cut down'

E-cigarettes can help smokers stop or reduce their habit, a respected international review has confirmed. The first Cochrane review to examine the products considered two randomised trials with data from 662 current smokers. The review authors, from the UK and New Zealand, said the results needed to be expanded on by other studies. Public health doctors said they remained concerned that the devices could reverse progress on smoking.

FAA warns U.S. airlines about e-cigarette risk

WASHINGTON -- The Federal Aviation Administration is warning U.S. carriers about the risk of fires caused by e-cigarettes. Earlier this month at Los Angeles International Airport, an overheated e-cigarette sparked a fire in a piece of luggage in a baggage area. Four months prior to that at Boston's Logan Airport, an e-cigarette in a passenger's bag caught fire in the cargo hold of a plane -- forcing an evacuation.

TVECA's Ray Story Refutes prospective E-cigarette ban in Hong Kong

Electronic cigarettes should be regulated in Hong Kong, not banned, says the head of the industry's largest representative organization.

Ray Story, president of the Tobacco Vapor Electronic Cigarette Association, said suggestions of a ban would be "ignorant" and "irresponsible" given that smoking rates in the city were already flat lining and that the product could help eliminate conventional tobacco use.

Big Pharma financed ALA lobbies for FDA deeming reg/ban

Big Pharma financed ALA lobbies for FDA deeming reg/ban by repeating CDC’s lies about e-cigs and NYTS e-cig data, conflating e-cigs with tobacco with highly addictive and lethal cigarettes, denigrating record decline in and record low cigarette smoking rates among teens, and failing to ethically disclose ALA’s huge financial conflicts of interest.

Smoking / Quit Smoking Regulatory Affairs / Drug Approvals How to measure nicotine delivery from e-cigarettes

To be effective in helping smokers get off cigarettes, e-cigarettes
need to deliver enough nicotine to replace what smokers were getting
from tobacco, but also need to deliver it consistently at different use
sessions. From later this year e-cigarettes sold in Europe will have to
be tested to ensure that they deliver nicotine consistently, but no
specific protocol has been proposed yet.

Will 2017 Be Altria Group Inc.'s Worst Year Yet?

2016 was a strong year for Altria Group (NYSE: MO), with the stock jumping 20% to be among the best performers in the tobacco industry. Overall, the cigarette giant has done a good job of finding ways to maximize its profits, and there are reasons why bullish investors think that Altria could sustain its positive momentum in 2017. Yet Altria also faces challenges, and if it makes a misstep, then 2017 could easily become a nightmare year for the company. Let's take a look at what it would take to turn 2017 into Altria's worst year yet.

Switching to e-cigarettes ‘substantially’ reduces toxins in the body

Scientists at University College London found that people who switched from regular to e-cigarettes or nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) for at least six months had ‘substantially’ lower levels of toxic and carcinogenic substances in their bodies.

During the study, which was funded by Cancer Research UK, researchers analysed the saliva and urine of long-term e-cigarette and NRT users and compared them to those of cigarette smokers.

Stricter tobacco legislation enters into force

The changes moreover ban the advertising of tobacco and related products as well as the sale of tobacco products with characterising flavours.

Also being introduced is five-year licensing of tobacco vendors and stricter regulations for the promotion of tobacco products and for various non-standard tobacco and smoking products.

Also banned is the sale of confectioneries, snacks, toys and other items intended for minors in the shape of tobacco products.

In February, Czech Republic President, Miloš Zeman signed off on a law that will clampdown on smoking in the area and will allow for cigarette alternatives, which already show signs of prominence, to be offered to people throughout the Republic.

The ban would prohibit smoking in areas that include, bars, theaters and restaurants, but vapor products and hookah will still be allowed in these areas, according to expatz.cz, an English language news site.

Legislators still attack vaping, even as evidence of its benefits mounts

Some state legislators are trying again to cripple the vaping market. They’ve revived last year’s proposal to restrict the nicotine-bearing vapor produced by electronic “cigarettes” to just three flavors -- tobacco, menthol or clove. In short, they want to ensure that vaping, the more healthful alternative to smoking tobacco, tastes like the cancer-causing habit it helps people overcome.

E-cigarettes fingered as source of NASTY VIRUS

E-cigarettes have been fingered as the source of a new computer virus. "IT guy" Jrockilla told the Talesfromtechsupport forum that he suspects the malware was "hard coded" into the USB charger of his boss's electronic toker. In his post, he says:

E-cigarettes ARE less addictive, study finds - but experts warn long term health benefits are still unknown

We found that e-cigarettes appear to be less addictive than tobacco cigarettes in a large sample of long-term users,' said Jonathan Foulds, professor of public health sciences and psychiatry, Penn State College of Medicine. The popularity of e-cigarettes, which typically deliver nicotine, propylene glycol, glycerin and flavorings through inhaled vapor, has increased in the past five years. There are currently more than 400 brands of 'e-cigs' available.

E-Cigarettes Top Smoking Among Youths, Study Says

WASHINGTON — A new federal survey has found that e-cigarette use among teenagers has surpassed the use of traditional cigarettes as smoking has continued to decline. Health advocates say the trend for e-cigarette use is dangerous because it is making smoking seem normal again. They also worry it could lead to an increase in tobacco smoking, though the new data do not show that.

The War on E-Cigarettes & The Consequences of Partialism

If you've followed the news very closely, or even just skimmed it in the past year, you've likely noticed that there are many outlets "researching" and reporting on the negative effects of the E-Cigarette (or lack there of?).

The fact is that there are many who harbor their own agenda whether it be pro or anti e-cigarette, but what both sides mostly agree on is that traditional tobacco products have caused a simply massive amount of death over it's years of ruling the market for those who seek nicotine. The studies have been done. The science is clear.

Researchers find toxic metals in e-cigarette liquids

Since their emergence into the marketplace as an alternative to tobacco, health officials have been conflicted over e-cigarettes.

The nicotine delivery system contains chemicals, but not nearly as many as tobacco smoke. More troubling, perhaps, was the fact that little research had been done on nicotine vapor created by the devices.

But researchers have been busy catching up, and a team at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health reports finding high levels of toxic metals in the liquid that creates the aerosol that e-cigarette users inhale when they vape.

Will Reynolds-British American Merger be a Reality Soon?

The highly anticipated tobacco merger between Reynolds American Inc. RAI and British American Tobacco BTI seem to have cleared the antitrust hurdles from the U.S authorities. The two participating companies have announced that the U.S. Department of Justice or the Federal Trade Commission has not asked for any additional information regarding the proposed merger within the waiting period, which has now expired. However, the deal expected to close in the third quarter of 2017, is still subject to shareholder approval from the participating companies.

However there’s been a further blow for antis as a new study confirms that vaping doesn’t seem to cause cancer.

Government & Pharma casting the E-Cigarette in a bad light by any means possible.

If you've read any of the news on the e-cigarette in the past week, you'll notice it's been dominated by stories of half-baked short term studies claiming that e-cigarettes cause allergies to be irritated, slow the healing process, and even heart and respiratory problems.

These studies are mostly done independently, by Pharma related organizations, or by government or state sponsored entities with other conflicts of interest.

Confusion Coming with California's Legal Marijuanna

LOS ANGELES — Ready or not, California kicks off recreational marijuana sales on Jan. 1. And, mostly, it's not.

Los Angeles and San Francisco are among many cities still struggling to fashion local rules for pot shops and growers. Without the regulations, there could be limited options in many places for consumers eager to ring in the new year with a legal pot purchase.

"The bulk of folks probably are not going to be ready Jan. 1," conceded Cara Martinson of the California State Association of Counties.

FDA Update on Provisional Substantial Equivalence (SE) Review Process

Web Statement – April 5, 2018

Since the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act (TCA) was signed in 2009, FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products (CTP) has been responsible for using the tools of product regulation to help reduce the disease and death associated with tobacco use in the United States. Bubble pop? Brownie batter? Vapes’ added flavors fuel e-cigarette debate

A heated debate is redrawing alliances in the tobacco control movement as federal officials wrestle with how to regulate the growing e-cigarette market.

The players include researchers, smoking-cessation advocates and “vaping” connoisseurs.

“It’s become very divisive in a community that was largely united against Big Tobacco,” said Samir Soneji, an associate professor at the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice, who researches tobacco control policy.

Reader View: E-cigarette taxes bad for New Mexico

Lawmakers in Santa Fe recently considered a proposal to institute a tax on vapor products (commonly referred to as electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes) at the exorbitant rate of 4 cents per milligram nicotine — a level that would make many products more expensive than the real thing: toxic, deadly cigarettes. While this is being posited as a “public health” measure, it is in fact a money grab, the effect of which would be antithetical to both public health and New Mexico’s budgetary needs.

E-Cigarette Tech Takes off as Regulation Looms

Just a few years ago, early adopters of e-cigarettes got their fix by clumsily screwing together a small battery and a plastic cartridge containing cotton soaked with nicotine. Now, the battery-powered contraptions have computer chips to regulate puffs and temperature, track usage, talk to other electronic devices and even blink when "vapers" are near each other. Federal officials say the technology race could make creating standards the devices, which heat a liquid to create vapor rather than burning tobacco, more difficult in the future.
